Rodrigo Brandao

Art / Nonfiction / Climate Communications

Rodrigo Brandão is a senior communications strategist with an established record in advancing social justice, climate causes, and the arts. He is currently Director of Communications at Climate Rights International, a non-profit organization working on the intersection of climate and human rights issues.

Previously, at the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), he planned and executed comprehensive national campaigns linking extreme weather disasters to climate change, translating complex scientific studies from organizations like World Weather Attribution and Climate Central into accessible news narratives. He also played a key role in the communications campaign for the “Summer of Heat” actions during the summer of 2024, among other projects.

During his five-year tenure as Senior Director of Communications and Strategy at The Intercept, Rodrigo developed and implemented annual strategic communications plans supporting the outlet’s journalism, including its podcasts, videos, and investigative series. His work there spanned writing press releases, news alerts, and annual reports; developing methodologies to measure the impact of the organization’s journalism; and establishing partnerships with organizations such as Al Jazeera, Mediapart, and the ACLU for specific investigations. He has also worked as a freelancer for The Marshall Project, Al Jazeera, and other journalism and social justice organizations.

Rodrigo’s earlier career featured leadership roles in film distribution, serving as Vice President of Marketing and Publicity at Kino Lorber and founding the Latin American cinema label Cinema Slate. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he began his communications studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and holds degrees in Cinema and Photography and in Art History from Ithaca College. Brandão is currently a graduate student in the Integrated Media Arts program at the City University of New York (CUNY) and a member of Film Forum’s Advisory Committee.
